Devil Fruits

Devil Fruits are supernatural fruits that each grant a unique power when eaten, at the cost of removing the eater’s ability to swim. A Devil Fruit power can only be held by one individual at a time, but will reappear in a new fruit after they die. In turn, no individual may acquire more than one power, with only one historic exception.

Devil Fruits exist along three broad categories: Paramecia, the most common, which grant a vast array of “superhuman” abilities; Zoan, which grant the power to transform into animals; and Logia, the rarest and most powerful, which grant the power to transform into a natural element. Each fruit has a unique appearance, making identification and documentation possible, although there is at least one known case of a fruit being renamed and rebranded.

Scattered throughout the world, Devil Fruits are rare enough to be considered myths in much of the Blue Seas. They appear to be most common in the Grand Line, having empowered many key figures among the Three Great Powers. This rarity, coupled with their abilities, make Devil Fruits highly sought-after; some specimens may sell for billions, and extensive efforts have been made to replicate their powers and mass-produce artificial versions for warfare. The scientist Vegapunk has performed the most extensive research into Devil Fruits and achieved many unnatural applications and replications of their abilities, but not even he knows their origins for certain.

Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum-Gum Fruit)

The Gomu Gomu no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants the user’s body the properties of rubber, effectively making them a Rubber Human (ゴム人間, Gomu Ningen, English: “Rubber Man/Person”). Originally, the fruit was called Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika and classified as a Mythical Zoan-type fruit that allows one to transform into the legendary “Sun God” Nika (and gain his rubbery attributes), before being renamed and reclassified by the World Government to hide the truth. In the present, only a few are aware of the fruit’s true nature, and its existence was never known to be recorded anywhere. The Gomu Gomu no Mi is a violet, spherical shaped fruit, similar to a cantaloupe, with a stem sprouting out of the top, with swirls that go in a curly “S” like-pattern. Its overall appearance greatly resembles a Yubari King.

Hito Hito no Mi (Human-Human Fruit)

The Hito Hito no Mi is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform into a human or a half-human hybrid at will. It was eaten by the reindeer Tony Tony Chopper, turning him into a Human Reindeer (人間トナカイ, Ningen Tonakai?). The Hito Hito no Mi is a mushroom-shaped fruit with a stem sprouting out of the top, with swirls that go in a curly “S” like-pattern. It has a red top and a whitish stalk, granting it an overall appearance that greatly resembles an Amanita muscaria, which is often used as a stereotyped image of a mushroom.

Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit)

The Mera Mera no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to create, control, and transform into fire at will. It was eaten by Portgas D. Ace, and two years after its reincarnation was eaten by Sabo. The Mera Mera no Mi is a round orange fruit, composed of many flame-shaped components with swirl patterns on each one, and has a swirled stem on the top.

Gura Gura no Mi (Tremor-Tremor Fruit)

The Gura Gura no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit which allows the user to create vibrations, or “quakes”, making the user a Tremor Human (震動人間, Shindō Ningen?, English: “Quake Man”). It was eaten by Edward Newgate, but upon his death, its power was stolen by Marshall D. Teach. The Gura Gura no Mi resembles a blue pear, albeit with a “cracked” lower appearance resembling the kind created by the user. The upper section features various swirls. Similar to other fruits, it also has a green T-shaped stem that curls up at one end.

Ito Ito no Mi (String-String Fruit)

The Ito Ito no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to create and manipulate strings, making the user a String Human (糸人間, Ito Ningen?, English: “String-Man”). It was eaten by the former Warlord of the Sea Donquixote Doflamingo. The fruit is shaped like a pear, pale lilac in color, and topped with a curly, fuchsia stem. It also has the swirl pattern typical of Devil Fruits embedded all over it.
